Current Obession: Books

12 Dec

9-1 019

As you can see, I may have gotten a little carried away at the library.

I am currently loving getting as many FREE books as I like, and using Goodreads.com to choose the next !

I have read 53 books this year so far (thankful to Goodreads for helping me keep track) and the books below were some of my favorites!

1. Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
I loved this book. So much so, that I rushed to read the other two books in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series. There is adventure, love and mystery in the plot… what more could you ask for!? This is a lovely story about a book store Siempre and Sons and the adventures the family who owns the shop experience. Great for anyone who loves books!

2. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
This book is a THRILLER. I have not read a book with such unlikable characters and frankly a negative subject (a rocky marriage) that succeeded in surprising me not just once but twice during the book. I literally exclaimed aloud, WHAT!? twice while reading the book.

3. The Dirty Life: On Farming Food and Love by Kristen Kimball
What an eye-opening candid memoir about life on a farm. As someone who lives in one of the agricultural centers of America, I have a new-found respect, an let’s be honest, a feeling of absolute AWE at all of the hard work they accomplish everyday. Very interesting and entertaining read!

4. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
This is a Non fiction story of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells revolutionized scientific discovery in cell replication and contributed to the discovery of several vaccines. This compelling story covers her life and the lives of her family in the wake of discovering how Henrietta’s cells, used without permission, changed the world. I would definitely recommend this book! It is amazing to learn about how much one persons cells have the potential to save so many lives and also scary to learn the liberties doctors have over the use of your cells!

5. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
This is a heartbreaking-ly wonderful book. The creative method in which it is written captures the emotional and beautiful moments in the life of a little girl stealing books during reign of Hitler. This book made me laugh and cry and in my opinion, it is a must read

What have you read that you loved this year!?

The Joy of Gardening

15 May

I did not know how much joy a garden could bring until recently! The excitement of seeing what you planted grow and flourish and biggest bonus- it changes daily, makes gardening so fun!

I obviously think gardening is more fun than Bailey does :)

Big thanks to my husband who helped me build this raised garden bed that has become my hobby!! We used this plan and soil combination (from pinterest, what did we do before that?) to plant*:

Basil
Red and Yellow Bell Peppers
Jalapenos
Eggplant
Yellow crookneck Squash
Mr. Stripey Heirloom Tomatoes
German Johnson Heirloom Tomatoes

*I bought all of my plants from Lowes (with a 10% military discount) and saved the receipt because they will replace your plant if it dies!

Here it was the day I planted everything April 9th  and today May 15th!

In just a moth everything has doubled! Love this baby bell pepper!

Squash!

What are you growing in your garden!?

Thoughts for a Tuesday

13 Dec

This is an apology for being MIA lately! In case you care to know, here is what I have been up to!

Week before Thanksgiving: PACKING! My parents graciously drove from Texas (yes to California, they are fabulous) and for a few days helped me pack boxes until taking a break to head the coast, Cambria, CA, to celebrate Thanksgiving for the whole week! They rented a beautiful home with a porch where you could see the ocean. It was a wonderful relaxing week and great to get some quality time with my parents and sister, who flew in from Chicago.

My Mom and Sister

The week after Thanksgiving: We closed on our new place on Monday, got the keys that evening and then began MOVING (Monday was also my Husbands Birthday, and I may or may not have giggled and yelled,  “hope you don’t mind I got you a HOUSE for your birthday!!!”  at least 10 times that day). My parents and I (again I have nominated them for sainthood) took loads from the old house to the new (about 2 miles apart) all week. It felt good to get out of our rental and move our goods into a place we own! Woo woo! We hired professional movers to move the big items and they finished that Saturday evening.

I spent the next week unpacking and writing Christmas cards and spending lots of time with my wonderful friend Taylor who was just blessed with a healthy little baby girl! It has been so fun and wonderful and inspiring to see this little girl come into this world and what a wonderful mother she will be! Her husband is deployed and this is their first baby, and she could not have handled this with more grace and strength!

Now it is a new week and I am back into the swing of things! I have missed blogging as this is an outlet for me to talk about how much I love eating :) , being a military spouse and just enjoying life in general. I hope you are all as blessed as I am . I have had a lot of time this holiday season to think about all of the things I am thankful for.

I have a wonderful and thoughtful, not to mention ridiculously handsome, husband.

I have the most amazing, supportive and understanding parents (for real, who drives 4,942.3 miles to help their daughter move!?)

I have been blessed with friends who always know what to say and make me smile. I can only hope to be as good to them as they are to me! I don’t deserve them!!

I am thankful for my health and the health of those I love!

I hope your Thanksgiving and now Christmas season is filled with many blessings!!!

Thanksgiving + Moving = Fire?

9 Nov

The red cross warns..

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is prime time for these accidents, since many people break out the pots and pans for the holiday.”

I have to admit I proved them right. Thanksgiving is a fabulous holiday centered around eating celebrating what we are thankful for. It can also be a time of high stress, making sure all of the food is perfect, all of the family is present, the napkins are pressed (ya right) then throw in a PCS or Move? CHAOS

Changing Clothes for the Changing Season

3 Nov

As I am writing this I am wearing a SWEATER! I am so excited for the changing season so I can begin wearing leggings, boots, sweaters and let’s be honest, sweat pants. I have to clarify that I like the changing of season because I do not live in an area that has crazy cold winters; just another thing to love about California’s mild temperatures!

One thing that is kind of a pain… changing out your closet for the changing of the seasons.I have to admit, I recently cleaned out my closet and it was not as easy as I thought it would be.  I still have some clothes from college (am I really going to wear that tube top ever again- probably should NOT) nor will I be able to wear the bazillions of Texas A&M t shirts I own (but do not have the heart to get rid of). I took several breaks (where I browsed outfits on pinterest put together by people WAY more fashionable than me) during the cleaning process, and would re-evaluate my “maybe keep this” items after a refresher. Following these tips helped me not decide to throw everything I have away and try to convince What Not to Wear that I need to be their newest client… Check out my article over at the USAA Military Spouse Community for tips!

Moving and Avoiding Chaos in the Kitchen

13 Sep

While I cannot promise that I don’t make a HUGE mess in the kitchen quite frequently… organizing the kitchen before moving really is a must! Is it easier to put it off to the last-minute? Initially yes, and I can say this with the conviction of an experienced procrastinator. However, it really makes it a hot mess when you are scrambling 30 minutes before the movers arrive (this is when you begin to curse yourself for waiting this long). Don’t do this.

Don't do this either.

Here are some tips and tricks from my personal kitchen moving experiences! Head on over to USAA’s Military Spouse Community to get the full scoop, and while you are over there I encourage you to start a discussion, or comment or say hey, anything! :)

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Being Outdoorsy

7 Sep

I like to consider myself a semi outdoorsy (yes I am making outdoorsy an adjective) but not really an outdoor enthusiast per say. Labor day weekend was coming up and for once we knew in advance my husband would have the weekend free plus Friday and Labor day off! Woo hoo four-day weekend! I was filled with hopes and dreams of spending the weekend in Monterrey or Carmel enjoying the beautiful coast, staying at a nice hotel and trying new restaurants. So, when my husband suggested we go camping at Mineral King for the long labor day weekend I tried to be excited. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy camping just not as much as I enjoy staying in a hotel.

We hit the road Thursday afternoon, after packing our car full of backpacks, freeze-dried camping foods, water and our dog Bailey. The drive was a bit scary at times (a one way road for two-way traffic up a mountain?) but the views became more and more incredible. I am that passenger who insists we stop to take pictures along the way :)

We finally arrive at the top, and I am excited to get out of the car and explore! I open the back seat to let the dog out and am in the process of putting him on the leash when WHOOSH, he spots a few deer and is off. By off i mean runs into the wilderness with me screaming like a mad woman behind him to stop and come back. All i can think is that my little puppy (he is two not so much a puppy, but humor me anyway) is GONE alone in the woods filled with bears. Trying to remain calm and not hysterical I being traipsing around in the woods trying to use my “nice” dog voice to call him back to me. Ten LONG minutes later he, happy as a little clam comes running down the mountain sides towards me like the whole episode was no big deal. I was so relieved and vowed the rest of the trip he will be firmly secured to my husband or I. As soon as i begin to calm down from this episode, my hub and I split up, he walks to the campsite to set up the tent (about ten minutes away from where we parked) and my task was to bring the remainder of the items in the car to the campsite. No big deal right? I get halfway to the campsite and hear a strange noise… I look up and who is looking at my about 20 feet away? A BEAR. Holey Moley. I have no idea how I stayed calm and remembered what to do when confronted by a bear (OK I am so dramatic it was not confronting me, we just unfortunately crossed paths) anyway I slowly backed away trying to be as quiet and non threatening looking as possible, this bear probably judging me on by super fashionable camping gear (who doesn’t love pants that the legs can zip off to be shorts, ill probably be on the cover of Vogue soon) and continued to “follow” be in my retreat! AH! Luckily the bear was distracted by something else, and I took that time to fully retreat back to the car. I got in the car and promptly locked the doors (because you know these days bears open car doors?). Checked for cell reception so I could inform my hub I needed to be escorted from the car to the campsite because I was now scared to try the path. 30 long minutes go by and no sign of the bear, and it is getting darker…so while I was scared to see the bear again, I was even more frightened by the prospect of it getting dark and not seeing the bear and it jumping out of the trees and eating me. Again, I was being totally rational. I creep, literally I was tip-toeing, back to the campsite via the bear sighting path, hoping that by not making any noise i could hear the bear coming form a mile away? I make it back to the campsite and upon seeing my husband burst into tear (if you know me this is not surprising, for some reason tears seem to be my go to emotion. happy – tears, sad- tears, frustrated- tears, hungry- tears, just kidding on that last one :) )

Besides almost losing the dog, and getting eaten by a bear, it was a wonderful camping trip. We practically had the place to ourselves Thursday and Friday night and gazed at the stars (which are unbelievable when you are in the mountains here) and drank wine by the campfire. So, if you can brave the bears, i strongly recommend you camp at Mineral King, the views are well worth the trouble!

Excitement!

17 Aug

My Husband miraculously has a weekday off (surprise!) so we have decided to be spontaneous and take advantage of the natural wonders so close to us, and head to Yosemite National Park today!

SPeaking of doing fun things, I recommend treating where you live like a vacation spot and checking out a national park, a new restaurant or a festival! Many Military spouses have getting to know their new town down to an art…but even that can use a reminder every once in a while to seek out all the positives in a new place! Check out my post this week for USAA Military Spouse Community on getting to know your new town!

Also the Pioneer Woman’s food network show DEBUTS IN TEN DAYS! I am going to throw a viewing party with fried chicken, cowboy boots and wine. I will also try to dress up Bailey as a beagle. I’ll let you know how that goes !!!

See how excited he is?

Hope you all have a fantastic Wednesday!

Bad Habits

2 Aug

My husband left today for a week and my bad habits have already started.

I watched two hours of design star (LOVE). Man I wish I had a knack for design and decorating! How can I get these people to come to my house?

I ate Guacamole and chips for lunch.

I made cookie dough and instead of baking the cookies I ate the dough (froze the rest for when my husband returns!)

Going to try to redeem my lazy self by heading to the dog park!

Do you revert to weird behavior when your spouse is away?
