Military Blogger Conference Recap

16 May

I was lucky enough to attend Military.com’s Military Blogger’s Conference this past weekend and wanted to share some of my experiences! I was there representing USAA’s Military Spouse Community and am always blown away by the amount of positive feedback I hear about USAA. It makes me so proud to be working for a company whose dedication and support to our military is unwavering!

Friday night was a cocktail hour, dinner and awards ceremony to present bloggers with a “MilBloggie“. I was THRILLED to meet some other military spouse bloggers* and encourage you to check them out too!

And of course I was there with the fabulous other spouses who work for USAA’s Military Spouse Community:
Tara Crooks

Wendy Polling founder of My Military Life
Chazz Pratt author of Fort Living room Transition Course

* I wish I had more time (and more of a voice) to talk to each of you more!

All dressed up and ready for the awards ceremony

Friday nights award ceremony was fun, but the highlight for me was meeting Colonel Charles McGee. COL McGee spoke of his experiences as being one of the first African-American fighter pilots and an original Tuskegee Airmen. He is now at a ripe  young age  of 93, and I can only hope to be so eloquent and look so good when I am in my 90s! His story of perseverance in a time of such ugly prejudice and inequality gave me goosebumps. It as an honor and privilege to be in the presence of such a hero, with 409 combat missions under his belt. AMAZING.

Tara, Wendy and I ended the night with some cookies and milk martinis (who knew there was such a thing -delicious!).

Saturday began early with breakfast and a Q&A session with Virginia Congressman Randy Forbes.

Chazz Pratt, Wendy Poling, Randy Forbes, Tara Crooks and Me!

The remainder of the day was filled with panels including a DoD blogger roundtable where each branch discussed their plans for social media, then a more dramatic panel with some reporters answering some tough questions about military in the media but my FAVORITE Q&A session was with Scott Waugh, co-founder of Bandito Brothers Films and Producer/Director of the film Act of Valor. I admittedly had not seen the Act of Valor film (in which the actors are not actors they are real US Navy Seals!). While his use of colorful language made me giggle, his respect and admiration for the Navy Seals and their families blew me away. I am thankful there are people like him in Hollywood who appreciate our men in uniform and wish to portray them just as they are,  as heroes. I watched the movie after returning home, and enjoyed it as much as a military spouse can enjoy a movie about the dangers and harsh realities our loved ones in uniform go through. I boo-hooed the entire movie, while my husband appreciated the use of real Seals, real “bad a$$” equipment and weapons. I encourage you to check the movie out (probably a better idea to watch it while your spouse is NOT deployed).

The rest of the conference was enjoyable and informative, but I have to admit my favorite part is networking. Meeting other bloggers and matching a face to a blog you read is so fun! If you were at the MilBlog Conference and I missed you, or we did not get a chance to talk, feel free to contact me! I would love to connect or possible write something together!!

Tis the season to be Moving

15 Dec

My favorite Holiday movie is hands down Elf. It is such a funny, lighthearted cheery and fun movie I cannot help but smile and quote Buddy a time or two! How do you keep up that cheer and holiday spirit if you are Moving or if all of your decorations are in boxes? Check out my article over at USAA’s Military Spouse Community for tips and tricks to staying as excited about Christmas as Buddy even during a PCS!

Changing Clothes for the Changing Season

3 Nov

As I am writing this I am wearing a SWEATER! I am so excited for the changing season so I can begin wearing leggings, boots, sweaters and let’s be honest, sweat pants. I have to clarify that I like the changing of season because I do not live in an area that has crazy cold winters; just another thing to love about California’s mild temperatures!

One thing that is kind of a pain… changing out your closet for the changing of the seasons.I have to admit, I recently cleaned out my closet and it was not as easy as I thought it would be.  I still have some clothes from college (am I really going to wear that tube top ever again- probably should NOT) nor will I be able to wear the bazillions of Texas A&M t shirts I own (but do not have the heart to get rid of). I took several breaks (where I browsed outfits on pinterest put together by people WAY more fashionable than me) during the cleaning process, and would re-evaluate my “maybe keep this” items after a refresher. Following these tips helped me not decide to throw everything I have away and try to convince What Not to Wear that I need to be their newest client… Check out my article over at the USAA Military Spouse Community for tips!

Being Ridiculously Organized

5 Oct

I would like to pretend I a ridiculously organized.,to the point I know where everything is at all times. Those of you who know me know this is exactly the opposite of who I really am…

Dear keys,

Seriously you win this game of hide and seek. I give up and I miss your sparkly pink purse key chain… the spare keys are plain and boring. Come back to me.

Love,

Briana

Ok, back to pretending I am super organized. Head on over to USAA’s Military Spouse Community and learn how you should be keeping an inventory of your belongings whether you are moving or not! (and seriously let me know if you have seen my car keys…. ;) )

Anticipation

23 Sep

I tend to think of my life as a personal musical production, definitely something off Broadway, maybe not even street corner quality (unless you have seen me pas de bourreé or the MC Hammer dance)  I digress, soon ( you know how the military is, soon is really a relative term for “I have no idea when”) we will be finding out his assignment for the NEXT THREE YEARS.

I am super excited and anxious to know!! Head on over to USAA’s Military Spouse Blog and share how you deal with the anticipation of a PCS. I am currently dealing with it by spontaneously bursting into the Carly Simon song, anticipation.

Moving and Avoiding Chaos in the Kitchen

13 Sep

While I cannot promise that I don’t make a HUGE mess in the kitchen quite frequently… organizing the kitchen before moving really is a must! Is it easier to put it off to the last-minute? Initially yes, and I can say this with the conviction of an experienced procrastinator. However, it really makes it a hot mess when you are scrambling 30 minutes before the movers arrive (this is when you begin to curse yourself for waiting this long). Don’t do this.

Don't do this either.

Here are some tips and tricks from my personal kitchen moving experiences! Head on over to USAA’s Military Spouse Community to get the full scoop, and while you are over there I encourage you to start a discussion, or comment or say hey, anything! :)

Happy Tuesday everyone!

PCS Diaries

25 Aug

Back in the day, I had  Lisa Frank diary complete with a tiny lock and key. I cannot imagine what I wrote in there… ok, I definitely know what I wrote in there because it was all about making encouraging the girls who lived on my street (there were six of us around the same age) do dances, put on plays, explore the bayou behind our house (yes bayou, that’s Houston for ya), school crushes, my ambition to be a “professional researcher” (still unsure what that would entail). Not much that anyone would probably want to read! However, as a military spouse, or cook, or party planner, wife and employee, it is more and more useful to have a place to write down your thoughts and experiences! I learn more about cooking, moving, recent events etc through other people’s experiences than anything else! I find this to be true especially during a PCS: instead of sitting down with our old diary and writing every detail of the day for no one else to see, we sit down at the keypad on our laptops/computers and smart phone and share it with the world!

Check out some crazy/funny/stressful PCS stories here and share your own!!

Excitement!

17 Aug

My Husband miraculously has a weekday off (surprise!) so we have decided to be spontaneous and take advantage of the natural wonders so close to us, and head to Yosemite National Park today!

SPeaking of doing fun things, I recommend treating where you live like a vacation spot and checking out a national park, a new restaurant or a festival! Many Military spouses have getting to know their new town down to an art…but even that can use a reminder every once in a while to seek out all the positives in a new place! Check out my post this week for USAA Military Spouse Community on getting to know your new town!

Also the Pioneer Woman’s food network show DEBUTS IN TEN DAYS! I am going to throw a viewing party with fried chicken, cowboy boots and wine. I will also try to dress up Bailey as a beagle. I’ll let you know how that goes !!!

See how excited he is?

Hope you all have a fantastic Wednesday!

Pre PCS Purge

27 Jul

I have never been described as tidy. Growing up I would pay my sister to clean my room. Unfortunately she realized my loathing for cleaning and started charging more than I could afford to pay her…

My affinity to cleaning has not grown over the years and that is a shame since I married a neat freak. However, he has not complained about my method of dusting (it includes shuffling things around and blowing the dust off, maybe even using the long arm of the vacuum to do a quick dust grab). Enough about my lack of cleaning skills. Being organized and tidy makes moving MUCH easier. I try to remind myself about how much nicer our PCS would be if I didn’t just throw things in my desk drawers, or use the space under our bed to “store” stuff. Here  are some more tips and tricks to organizing and purging some of your belongings before you move!

The Moving Games, MVP Most Valuable Possessions!

20 Jul

Dear NFL football peeps,

I think you should come to agreement already. You all make A LOT of money and everyone is semi worried that the season of chip and dip eating and beer drinking might be delayed!

Love,

Briana

This post really has nothing to do with football, or the hunger games. However, it does have to do with your most valuable possessions! Here are some tips to moving your most precious belongings.
